GE centrifugals set for Canadian LNG plant

    December 25, 2014

LNG Canada Development Inc. has selected GE vertically- and horizontally-split centrifugal compressor for a planned gas liquefaction plant at Kitimat, British Columbia.

The two-train plant will convert Canadian gas for export to the Far East. Owners of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project are Shell Canada Energy (50%), PetroChina (20%), Korea Gas Corp. (15%) and Mitsubishi Corp. (15%).

The compressors will be driven by GE’s LMS100-PB dry low emission (DLE) aeroderivative gas turbines. GE said they have the highest simple-cycle efficiency of any industrial gas turbine with ratings of 140,800 hp (105 MW) and 45% efficiency at ISO conditions.

GE said the aerodynamically-coupled, free-power turbines provide speed, flexibility and high torque for typical LNG compressor loads, especially during start sequencing with pressurized conditions in the refrigeration loop, and avoid the need for starter/helper motors.
